Abdominoplasty

Commonly known as 'tummy tuck", this procedure removes excess skin and fat from the lower and middle abdomen. The abdominal muscles can be surgically tightened or repaired at the same time. Abdominoplasty is often combined with liposuction in other areas.

Abdominoplasty is a suitable procedure for patients with excess abdominal fat and loose skin. It is also appropriate for women who have loose abdominal muscles as a result of multiple pregnancies.

The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and takes about 3 hours. A hospital stay between 3 to 5 days is required. Recovery time ranges from 2 to 3 weeks.

Breast Surgery

Breast augmentation

In this procedure, the breasts are enlarged by surgical placement of implants behind the breasts. Incisions are made either in the armpits, just below the breast, or around the areola. Breast implants, which are silicone shells filled with either saline (salt water) or silicone gel, are inserted either beneath the breast tissue, or below the pectoral (chest) muscle.

Breast augmentation is usually done under general anaesthesia and takes 1.5 to 2 hours. A hospital stay is typically not required. Recovery time is about 1 to 2 weeks.

Breast reduction (female)

This operation is done to correct excessively large and sagging breasts. These may give rise to symptoms such as shoulder, neck and backache, postural difficulties and skin problems. In this procedure, excess breast tissue, fat and skin are removed, and the nipple and areola are resited to an aesthetically pleasing position. Surgical scars are hidden in the lower portion of the breasts.

Breast reduction is usually done under general anaesthesia and takes approximately 3 hours. A hospital stay of 1 to 2 days is required and the recovery time ranges from 2 to 3 weeks.

Breast lift

Breast lift, also known as mastopexy is done to correct the sagging that can occur with time due to factors such as pregnancy, breastfeeding and gravity. Incisions are made in the lower part of the breast to remove excess skin, following which the nipple and areola are moved to a new, higher position. Mastopexy can be combined with placement of breast implants to further enhance the result.

This procedure is usually done under general anaesthesia and takes 1.5 to 3 hours. A hospital stay is usually not required.

Ear surgery (Otoplasty)

Ear surgery is usually done to set prominent ears back closer to the head or to reduce the size of large ears. Incisions are made at the back of the ear, sometimes removing a small piece of skin. Ear cartilage is then bent by a variety of techniques to give the desired shape. Following the procedure, a bulky bandage is placed around the head and over the ears to protect and maintain the new shape. After a week, this is removed and a lighter dressing or headband is worn over the ears.

Otoplasty can be done under either local or general anaesthesia, and takes 1.5 to 2 hours. No hospitalisation is required.

Eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Upper eyelid surgery

Upper eyelid surgery (upper blepharoplasty) is done to improve the appearance of the eyelids. In older patients, this may involve removing the drooping layers of skin that occur with aging. In younger patients, upper eyelid folds can be created or enhanced, and excess fat leading to a puffy appearance can be removed.

First, an incision is made over the desired fold to remove excess skin and fat. The cut edges are stitched to underlying structures to create an eyelid fold. When this heals, the scar is not visible as it is concealed within the eyelid fold.

In patients with minimal excess skin and fat, an eyelid fold can be created without any cuts being made, by placing stitches into the upper eyelid.

Upper eyelid surgery is usually done under local anaesthesia and takes from 45 min to 1.5 hours. Recovery time varies with the technique chosen. When an incision is made, and skin and fat are removed, stitches are removed after 5 to 7 days and swelling gradually subsides over 2 to 3 weeks. When no incision is made, the period of swelling is typically much shorter.

Lower eyelid surgery

Lower eyelid surgery (lower blepharoplasty) is done to rejuvenate the lower eyelids. The presence of loose skin and excess fat (eye bags) impart an aging, tired look to the face.

When there are both excess skin and fat which need to be removed, and the skin of the lower eyelid needs to be tightened to restore its youthful appearance, an incision is made just below the lower eyelashes. This heals with an almost invisible scar. Excess fat is either removed or redistributed to smooth out the contours of the lower eyelid area.

When there is no need to remove excess skin, fat can be removed through a hidden incision placed on the inner aspect of the lower eyelid.

Lower eyelid surgery is usually done under local anaesthesia, and takes from 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Stitches are usually removed after 5 to 7 days. Swelling and bruising is typically worst in the first 3 to 7 days and gradually subsides over 2 to 3 weeks.

Facial rejuvenation

Face lift (Rhytidectomy)

This procedure tightens sagging and loose skin of the face to restore a youthful appearance. Incisions are placed in the hairline and just in front of the ears, skin and muscle are tightened and repositioned, and excess loose skin removed.

A face lift is usually performed under general anaesthesia and may require a short hospital stay. Recovery may take several weeks.

Endoscopic brow lift

A brow lift or forehead lift is done to correct the sagging and drooping of the eyebrows and to smooth out forehead wrinkles that occur as part of the aging process. Unlike a conventional brow lift where a long incision is made in the hairline, an endoscopic brow lift requires several much smaller incisions made in the scalp. The forehead skin is elevated, repositioning the eyebrows to a higher, more youthful-looking position.

An endoscopic brow lift is usually perfomed under general anaesthesia and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Recovery period takes 2 to 3 weeks.

Liposuction & Vaser Liposelection

Liposuction is surgical removal of unwanted fat deposits from specific areas such as the abdomen, thighs, hips, buttocks, calves, arms, chin and neck. This is accomplished by means of fine suction tubes inserted through small, concealed incisions.

Refinement and advances in this technique over the years mean that the desired results can be achieved more effectively, and with less unwanted side effects such as bruising and swelling. One such refinement is the tumescent technique, in which large volumes of fluid are first injected into the area being treated. This reduces bleeding and helps fat to be removed more easily.

Another recent technological advancement is Vaser Liposelection, a procedure in which ultrasound energy is first used to break up fatty tissue, while surrounding tissues are left undamaged. This selective removal of fat allows for more effective contouring with less post-operative pain, bruising, and swelling.

Liposuction and Liposelection are usually done under general anaesthesia or sedation. Operation time varies according to the number of areas being treated. Typically liposuction of the abdomen would take 1 to 1.5 hours. No hospitalisation is required.

Nose surgery (Rhinoplasty)

Rhinoplasty is surgery to reshape the nose. A nose can be enlarged, the bridge made higher, and the shape of the tip enhanced by insertion of a silicone nasal implant. This procedure is usually done under local anaesthesia and involves a small hidden incision within the nostrils. Following the surgery the patient is required to wear adhesive tapes over the nose for a week to maintain the position of the implant and to control swelling.

Other techniques for enhancing the shape of the nose include modifying the underlying bone and cartilage of the nose. This sometimes requires a small external incision across the columella, which is the bridge of tissue between the nostrils. Rhinoplasty is sometimes done together with septoplasty, which is surgery of the nasal septum, the wall of cartilage and bone dividing the air passages. After the surgery, a protective plastic splint may be applied to the nose to help maintain its new shape. This is usually worn for one week after surgery.

Rhinoplasty may be done under either local or general anaesthesia, depending on the extent of the surgery. Hospitalisation is typically not required, and recovery time ranges from 1 to 3 weeks.
